Quincy Police Chief Paul Keenan, who will be retiring this summer after a 40-year career with the Quincy Police Department, will be recognized as the Grand Marshal of the 72nd Quincy Flag Day Parade this year. The parade will be held on Saturday June 10th at 7 p.m. Chief Keenan will participate in the parade and be recognized at a flag-raising ceremony immediately following the parade.

Chief Keenan was sworn into the department on August 11, 1983. He was promoted to the rank of Sergeant in 1991 and then again promoted to Lieutenant in 1995. In 2005, he was promoted to the rank of Captain. On July 1, 2008, he was sworn in as Chief of Department.

“Chief Keenan has led this department with distinction for the past 15 years,” said Mayor Thomas Koch. “He has modernized our department and brought regional and national acclaim for his work in a variety of areas, particularly in the battle against the drug epidemic. He has led the department with a steady hand during the past five years and is most deserving of a great send-off as he heads into retirement.”

Keenan was born and raised in Quincy. He is the oldest of Phil and Loretta Keenan’s seven children who were all raised in Wollaston. He has been active in a number of charitable and professional organizations throughout his career.

Added Mayor Koch, “The police chief position is one of the most challenging jobs in any community and for Paul to manage that position for 15 years is a testament to his love for this city and the role of the police department. The entire Flag Day Committee wants to thank him for his service throughout the past four decades.
